Time management is one of the soft skills that a lot of youth struggle with. It is easy to become overwhelmed with school or work when you feel like you have a million things to do and only a couple days to do it all. Learning some time management techniques when you are young can help you later in life too!
7 Time Management Techniques for Teens
Map out your week
- Take time at the beginning of every week to map out what needs to get done, and how important everything is.
- Everyone needs to visualize their weeks differently. Do some research on different types of planners, agendas or journals and find what works for you!
Use calendar updates
- Use your phone to your advantage and set up reminders through a calendar app. Schedule when you work or when assignments are due and then send yourself a reminder so that you never forget.

Prepare for school the night before
- It is hard to get everything done in the morning before school so try and organize yourself the night before. Try laying out your clothes and pack your lunch before you go to bed.
Have a place for everything
- It is easy to lose track of physical belongings so make sure that everything has its own place.
Use Google docs
- The last thing anyone wants is to lose their 5-page paper the night before it is due. And as much as we rely on technology it is bound to fail sometimes. Therefore with google docs, all of your work is auto-saved every few minutes and it can be accessed from anywhere as long as you have Wifi.
Time yourself
- You may assume a task takes a certain amount of time when in reality it takes less. Timing how long it takes you to accomplish something will help you realistically manage your time.
Break big tasks into smaller ones
- Take a big task like cleaning the bathroom and break it into smaller ones; clean the grout, wash the run, sanitize the counter, mop the floor, etc. That way the one large project doesn’t seem so intimidating.
